(CNN) -- People are living much longer than ever before, according to figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC report said the death rate for the U.S. population for 2009 was 741 deaths per 100,000 people in 2009, which is 2.3% lower than the 2008 rate.
"This marks the 10th year in a row that U.S. deaths rates have declined," the center said in a statement.
Overall life expectancy rose slightly from 78 years in 2008 to 78.2 years in 2009, the center said.
The center analyzed death certificates from all 50 states to get the data for the report.
