(CNN) -- A sports utility vehicle carrying a New York state legislator and his 7-year-old son came under fire Wednesday evening, police said.
Neither the legislator nor his son was injured.
Three bullets struck the SUV carrying Assemblyman William Boyland Jr. and his son in Brooklyn's Brownsville neighborhood shortly after 6 p.m., the Democratic lawmaker's spokesman said.
Two bullets entered the car's body while one pierced the rear windshield and lodged in a seat, said spokesman Elnatan Rudolph.
It is unclear if Boyland was the intended target of the shooting that happened in a neighborhood that he represents.
Rudolph said the assemblyman had learned from police that the bullets were crossfire from an unrelated gang shooting and that two people had been taken into custody.
But a New York Police Department spokesman denied anyone had been arrested and also said that police have not determined whether the shooting was gang-related.
Boyland has been the subject of considerable controversy in recent months. In March, he was charged in a federal corruption case.
He later pleaded not guilty to prosecutors' charge that he accepted $177,000 in bribes from a health care company.
After the Wednesday incident, Boyland was "shook up and worried about his son," his spokesman said.
