New York (CNN) -- New York police were searching Friday for two men suspected of opening fire on a crowded Brooklyn boardwalk a day earlier, killing a 16-year-old girl and injuring four other people.
The shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. Thursday as dozens of people converged on the Brighton Beach boardwalk amid a sweltering heat wave.
Two armed men were walking up from the beach when one of them approached the five victims as they sat on a bench by the Tatiana Cafe, a popular spot for Eastern European food and late-night dancing, according to Sgt. Carlos Nieves of the New York Police Department.
Police say the assailant opened fire, striking the five victims and causing panic on the boardwalk.
"I think there were at least eight shots," said Anthony Bukher, a waiter at Tatiana Cafe. "Everybody was running around in chaos when they heard the shots. People were hitting the ground."
Tysha Jones, 16, was killed, while four men in their 20s were wounded.
Three of the men are recovering at Brooklyn's Lutheran Medical Center. A 23-year-old man is listed in critical condition at Coney Island Hospital, Nieves said.
No arrests have been made.
