(CNN) -- A former student shot and wounded another teen at a middle school in Martinsville, Indiana, early Friday, authorities said.

The alleged shooter was taken into custody immediately after the incident, police said. The boy was a former student and should not have been on school property, Assistant Superintendent Randy Taylor told reporters.

The wounded student was flown to a hospital, but his condition was not immediately known, the Morgan County Sheriff's Department said.

The accused shooter was not identified by authorities.

The family of the wounded boy, 15, released a statement.

"Chance Jackson is out of surgery and is currently in stable condition," the statement said. "We appreciate all of the thoughts, prayers and support and ask that you also pray for the families of all involved. Please respect our privacy as we focus on Chance's recovery."

The shooting happened at the vestibule of West Middle School in Martinsville, southwest of Indianapolis, police said. A handgun was recovered from the scene, they said. No other details were released.

Police believe the shooting stems from a dispute that started at a school dance a few days ago, according to CNN Indianapolis affiliate WTHR.
