Former New York Congressman Anthony Weiner now a father

Story highlights

  • Weiner resigned from Congress after a lewd photo appeared on his Twitter account
  • He admitted that he took and posted the photograph of himself

Former Democratic New York Congressman Anthony Weiner became the father of a baby boy Wednesday, a source close to Weiner confirmed.

Weiner, 47, and his wife, Huma Abedin, 36, have named the child Jordan Zain Weiner. Abedin's pregnancy came to light amid a scandal that led to Weiner's eventual resignation from Congress.

In May, Weiner came under fire from both Republicans and Democrats when a lewd photo appeared on his Twitter account. Weiner, who represented constituents in Queens and Brooklyn, initially labeled the image a prank and declined to confirm or deny if the image was indeed him.

On June 6, however, he abruptly and tearfully apologized for falsely claiming that his Twitter account was hacked. He also admitted that he took and posted the photograph of himself.

"To be clear, the picture was of me, and I sent it," Weiner said.

Weiner resigned from Congress on June 16.
