(CNN) -- The man who pleaded guilty to a failed attempt to blow up a commercial airplane on Christmas Day says he wants a different legal adviser, ideally a Muslim male attorney.

Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab asked a judge to replace attorney Anthony Chambers on Monday, indicating their relationship had been strained, according to a hand-written letter submitted to U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds.

The Nigerian native has been acting as his own court representative, with Chambers advising him.

In October, AbdulMutallab pleaded guilty to trying to bring down a 2009 flight from Amsterdam to Detroit by exploding a device hidden in his underwear.

He is facing life in prison.

U.S. officials say the terror group al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula was behind the alleged bombing attempt.
