(CNN) -- [Updated 4 p.m. Monday, November 28] A man passes by the Cais do Sodre train station Thursday in Lisbon, Portugal.
Much of the country's transportation system has shut down as a result of a general strike. All international flights to and from Portugal were canceled Thursday, and train and bus services have also been cut back or eliminated.
Union workers are protesting the government's tough austerity measures.
Portugal, like Greece and Ireland, needed a bailout from the European Union. To receive the funds, however, the government has proposed a combination of tax hikes and deep cuts to public services. Two of the country's main unions called a strike last month to protest the proposal.
