Another 12,000 people have been infected, Pakistan health officials say
Monsoon rains made conditions ideal for dengue-carrying mosquitoes
Dengue fever has killed 202 people over the past two months in Pakistan and another 12,000 have been infected, according to Pakistani health officials.
The vast majority of the cases have been in Lahore, a city of more than 6 million people known as Pakistan’s cultural capital. It lies near the border with India.
Dengue is a tropical disease spread by mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water. Pakistan experienced heavy monsoonal rains that have made conditions ideal for those mosquitoes.
The World Health Organization lists symptoms of dengue that range from a mild fever to incapacitating high fever, with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and rash.
