The stunning Sossusvlei region of the Namib Desert in Namibia is known for being surrounded by tall, red sand dunes. "My camera bit the dust after walking up the dunes," says Sandra Hayden, who shot this photo. "It got sand in the lens."
In honor of Memorial Day, today's Travel Photo of the Day features the stunningly lit World War II Memorial and Washington Monument at night in Washington, D.C.

Karen Slavick visited the "quaint" Italian village of Roccamandolfi in April. "The structure, layout and construction of the village were amazing," she says, "but we couldn't help but be struck by the sadness of the deterioration of the village itself...my fear is the village will not last much longer."

Lee Gunderson hiked Zion Canyon with his wife and shared this awe-inspiring photo. "We hike the canyons regularly and everywhere one turns there is silence and awe."
John McGraw visited this peaceful scene and shared his lovely photo. "One thing I love about Michigan is that you can be at the beach one minute and at a beautiful waterfall the next. It was very peaceful to be in the middle of the woods with only the waterfall, wildlife and myself."
Hector L. Almodovar shared this bright photo taken on the streets of San Juan. "Known as the 'Island of Enchantment,' these colorful homes in the Old City offer a glance of the beauty tucked within a vibrant 500-year-old city."
"This shot was taken from the top of the Mandalay Bay Resort looking north over the strip just as the sun went down and the lights came up," Kristine Celorio said of her photo. "In Vegas, you never know what a night will hold. Everyone should go to Vegas at least once... there is no other place like it."
Eric Rossicci captured this photo of a graceful Great Blue Heron "flying with a twig in his beak, carrying it to his nest that he is now building at a heronry in Tsawwassen, where hundreds of other Herons are now nesting. This is an annual event that draws a lot of attention from people driving to and back from the ferry, which is not far way."
Zachary Jackman took this photo of the Monastery of Saint Anthony. "I found the trip incredibly serene. It was very quiet, clean, and set against towering cliffs and bright sunshine. Compared to the bustle and political turmoil in downtown Cairo, it was quite different."
Lauren Heavner shared this photo of Moorea, where she discovered a true paradise. "I was impressed with it's natural beauty. Many believe Bora Bora to be the most beautiful island in French Polynesia, they are mistaken."
Marie Sager shared this breathtaking view that she captured during a hike to Nevada Fall. "People are so focused on hiking that people miss really amazing views -- if I didn't stop and look up, I would have missed it."
John McGraw captured this scintillating image of a ship in Boston's harbor at dusk. "After the first week I thought I may run out of things to shoot, but it hasn't happened yet. The city has definitely started to grow on me."
"Dennis Avery, owner of Avery labels, bought up hundreds of acres of the area and hired artist/welder Ricardo Breceda to decorate the landscape of sand and shrubbery with enormous, life-like animal metal sculptures," Lanee Lee said of her boyfriend, Marc Valesella's photo. "Yet Breceda's masterpiece in size and skill to date is the 350 ft angry dragon that spans both sides of the road."
Sebastian George shared this entrancing image of the Hagia Sophia's interior. "I loved the lighting, especially the light beams coming thought the windows. Beautiful light , magnificent architecture, and lots of awe-struck visitors," he said of his visit.
Chanthana Mekwilai shared this photo of roses before the petals were scattered to comfort the feet of pilgrim monks, journeying from Wat Phra Dhammakaya, to Wat Paknam Bhasichareon. The roses are also a symbol of faith in Lord Buddha.
Ed G. De Guzman showcased the evening gradeur of San Francisco's City Hall in his photo. "The San Francisco City Hall has mystical lights that permeate the structure at night time. I wanted to project the trees neatly lined up as humans, standing with arms stretched in a welcome fashion."
Lulis Leal snapped this colorful shot while visiting "Durbs by the sea." "It is the promise of gorgeous stretches of golden sands, sub-tropical sunshine and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, together with the reputation as a surfer's haven, that draws thousands of people year after year."
Gil Koplovitz traveled to the Palmer research station, part of the United States Antarctic Program, and took this photo of the R/V Laurence M. Gould, the ship he used to reach the station from Chile. "Antarctica is my favorite place on earth, I have been there twice!" he said.
Thomas Denman shared this photo of bright cherry blossom blooms on the west side of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir. "I love NYC! It's tough to live anywhere else after living here," he said.
Lyn Freeman captured the sunset from Gantheaume Point, during a trip where she "played tourist" across her state. "I saw kangaroos galore, beautiful isolated beaches, hiked in stunning national parks, swam with whale sharks and tiger sharks and saw the famous pinnacles at sunset."
