Jerusalem (CNN) -- A 20-year-old Palestinian was killed Tuesday evening when Israeli soldiers opened fire in Gaza, Palestinian medical sources said.
Five other people were injured, the sources said. The incident occurred east of Khan Younis.
The Israel Defense Forces said it spotted people "planting explosives along the security fence in the southern Gaza Strip" and an armored force and an aircraft fired at the people and hit one of them.
A similar incident occurred on Sunday, the IDF said, when people setting up bombs in the same location were identified by Israeli forces, which fired at them and "confirmed direct hits."
The IDF said it blames Hamas for any "terrorist activity" from Gaza and said militants use "the presence of Palestinian civilians" in the area near the security fence "as cover for their activities."
