Jerusalem (CNN) -- The Israeli military said it killed two armed Palestinians and thwarted a terror attack in northern Gaza overnight.
Security forces used an air force plane and tank shells to fire on the two men near a security fence, the Israel Defense Forces said Thursday.
"IDF soldiers searching the area of last night's incident in the northern Gaza Strip discovered the bodies of two terrorists of the Islamic Jihad organization, and on them light weapons, uniforms and an explosive device," a statement said.
Since the beginning of the year, 100 terror-related incidents have taken place near the security fence surrounding Gaza, the military said.
Palestinian medical sources confirmed two slain militants belonged to the Islamic Jihad.
