Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi security forces recently detained and then released two Americans because they were taking photos in a sensitive area with checkpoints, an Iraqi police spokesman said Wednesday.

This comes as Iranian news reports said that two Americans were seized along the Iraq-Iran border and amid anxiety over the incarceration in Iran of three American hikers who were arrested last year along the border.

Maj. Ghalib al-Jabouri, police spokesman for Diyala province, told CNN that the pair -- who were on motorcycles -- claimed they were journalists when they were detained in Iraq five days ago. They were transferred to Iraq's interior ministry headquarters in Baghdad and later let go.
