Jerusalem (CNN) -- Israeli soldiers responding to mortar fire from Islamic Jihad militants shot and killed one of the militants along the border with Gaza, Islamic Jihad sources told CNN Monday.
An Israel Defense Forces spokesman said IDF soldiers opened fire after identifying a group of Palestinian militants planting an explosive device near a security fence in southern Gaza.
In addition to the militant who died, an IDF soldier was lightly injured and taken to a hospital, the spokesman said.
The IDF identified the fatality as "a prominent field operative" who participated in an exchange of fire in March that resulted in the deaths of two IDF soldiers.
A number of bulldozers entered the area near the fence and left a short time later. Militants plant explosive devices near the fence, the IDF said.
