(CNN) -- Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man and wounded five others in Gaza Wednesday, Gaza security and medical sources said.

An Israeli Defense Forces spokesman said a number of suspects were identified approaching a security fence in northern Gaza and Israeli tanks fired at them. The spokesman gave no other details.

The men belonged to the militant group Islamic Jihad and were setting up to fire rockets at Israeli Defense Forces tanks near Beit Hanoun, the Gaza sources said.

One of the shells hit downtown Beit Hanoun and injured two Palestinians, the sources said.
