Jerusalem (CNN) -- Five men were arrested Sunday as Palestinians clashed with Israeli police in East Jerusalem at one of the city's holiest sites.

The clashes occurred at the compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as Haram Al-Sharif.

Twenty to 30 Palestinian men threw rocks at security forces who used tear gas to try and disperse them, said Israeli Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

At one point, the protesters hid in parts of compound, causing police to enter the to get them, Rosenfeld said.

The five men who were arrested were Palestinians. Three others were injured by rubber bullets and seven were hurt by police batons, medics said.

Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police at the site in October led to the arrest of dozens of Palestinians.

And in 1996, dozens of people were killed in rioting at Al Aqsa mosque, which is part of the compound.

CNN's Guy Azriel and Kareem Khadder contributed to this report.
