Belfast, Northern Ireland (CNN) -- Two police officers have been injured after a bomb was thrown at them.

Local residents said the device was thrown by a passing motorcyclist. A civilian also was injured and hospitalized, they said.

A spokeswoman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said Friday night the explosive device was hurled toward the officers as they investigated a robbery in Belfast.

The bomb exploded on a sidewalk and the officers were hit by flying debris, she said.

Both were taken to the hospital, one with serious arm wounds. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, said the spokeswoman.

Police had no suspects early Saturday.
