Paris, France (CNN) -- A court in France ordered the release of a Rwandan physician accused of taking part in the 1994 genocide in his country, his lawyer said Wednesday.
The court -- based in Versailles, outside of Paris -- rejected Rwanda's request to extradite Eugene Rwamucyo and ordered his release.
Rwamucyo was arrested in May, and his lawyer Philippe Meilhac said he was to be released on Wednesday.
"My client is obviously extremely relieved, but he always thought he would make it," Meilhac said.
Rwamucyo is accused by Rwanda of participating in killings in the Butare region, situated in the country's south.
