London, England (CNN) -- The father of British Prime Minister David Cameron has died, the prime minister's office at Downing Street said Wednesday.

"It is with deep regret we can confirm that Ian Cameron died earlier this afternoon," Downing Street said in a statement. "He passed away shortly after the prime minister arrived at the hospital in France where he was undergoing treatment."

Cameron's father suffered a stroke and heart complications while on vacation in France, Downing Street said earlier in the day. The prime minister flew to France to be with his father, missing the weekly Question Time in the House of Commons.

Two weeks ago, David Cameron and his wife, Samantha, announced the birth of their fourth child, Florence Rose Endellion. The baby had been born early while the Camerons were on holiday in Cornwall, in southwest England.
