(CNN) -- Police seized and detonated an explosive device found under a soldier's car in Bangor, Northern Ireland, authorities said.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said they were called to the scene in the Chatsworth area of Bangor about 7:45 a.m. (2:45 a.m. ET) on a report of a suspicious device.

About 20 nearby homes were evacuated and bomb disposal experts were called in to carry out a "controlled explosion," police said.

"The object has (been) examined and declared a viable device," police spokesman John Anderson said in a statement.

The investigation was ongoing, and police urged anyone with information to contact them.
