Prosecutors: Death threats made in Belgian clergy child abuse probe

By the CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) -- The Belgian Prosecutor's Office said Monday it is investigating death threats against witnesses and magistrates involved in clergy child abuse cases.

The Vatican and Pope Benedict XVI criticized Belgian authorities last week for the manner in which they had searched for evidence, including drilling into the tomb of a former cardinal and raiding the home of the former archbishop.

Police raided the headquarters of the Belgian Catholic Church and searched for important documents in relation to their investigation into the abuse of children by church figures, prosecutor's spokesman Jean Marc Meilleur said Thursday.

The Catholic Church faces allegations of child abuse by clergy in at least another five countries, including the pope's native Germany, as well as Ireland, Austria, the Netherlands and the United States.
