Nuclear watchdog resigns

By the CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) -- Olli Heinonen, a deputy director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has resigned, the nuclear watchdog agency said Thursday.

Heinonen resigned for personal reasons and the resignation takes effect in August, the agency said.

Heinonen was the head of the Department of Safeguards, at the United Nations' watchdog agency.

That department is responsible for "verifying that nuclear material placed under safeguards is not diverted to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices," the agency said.
