(CNN) -- Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, had surgery on his left hand to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, Buckingham Palace said Tuesday.

The operation, coming days before his 89th birthday, was to relieve "pain, numbness and a burning sensation in the hand and fingers," the palace said.

Philip is the father of Prince Charles, the heir to the throne.
