Suspected drone strike kills 5 in Pakistan tribal region

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- A suspected U.S. drone strike in Pakistan's tribal region Monday killed three suspected militants and two civilians, Pakistani intelligence officials tell CNN.

Two intelligence officials said a drone fired two missile at a vehicle carrying three militants in the village of KhushHali which is near the town of Mir Ali in North Waziristan, one of the seven districts of Pakistan's volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

The sources say one militant was able to escape from the car and hide inside a nearby shop. The drone then fired two more missiles at the shop killing the militant, as well as two civilians inside.

Based on a count by the CNN Islamabad bureau, Monday's suspected drone strike was the 98th this year compared to 52 in all of 2009.

The officials asked not be named because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
