(CNN) -- An armed protester was shot while trying to storm through a NATO base in southern Afghanistan, military officials said Thursday.
The shooting happened when about 100 Afghan protesters started throwing rocks at coalition forces guarding a base in the Chorah district of Uruzgan province, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said.
"A protester armed with an AK-47 attempted to access the base through a side gate and was shot by an International Security Assistance Force service member," ISAF said.
The incident occurred at Forward Operating Base Mirwais. iSAF did not say why the protest occurred, but it is "assessing the situation" and will attempt to provide more detail about the clashes.
