(CNN) -- At least 17 children were killed in northern India on Wednesday when the roof of a private school collapsed, a disaster management official said.
The accident occurred in the town of Kapkot in Uttarakhand state around 10 a.m. Piyush Rautela, head of the state's disaster management agency said.
"So far, six other children have been rescued but our search is still under way," Rautela said.
The children at the school were between 8 and 11 years old.
A government official said on CNN-IBN that heavy rains caused rocks to fall on the roof.
