6.2-magnitude quake strikes off Vanuatu

(CNN) -- A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the island nation of Vanuatu on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey said.

The quake, with a depth of 35 km (21 miles), struck 120 km (74 miles) east-northeast of the city of Luganville on the island of Maewo.

Vanuatu is in the South Pacific Ocean, about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to Australia, and is made of numerous islands.
