Papua New Guinea struck by 6.3-magnitude quake

(CNN) -- A 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The shaking occurred at 5:18 a.m. Wednesday (1:18 p.m. ET Tuesday) at a depth of 35 kilometers (22 miles) and was centered 132 kilometers (82 miles) east-northeast of Kandrian, New Britain.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any alerts. The area is largely jungle.
