Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Three members of NATO's International Security Assistance Force and five civilians died Tuesday during an insurgent attack against Afghan National Civil Order Police headquarters in Kandahar, the force said in a statement.

The attack began with a blast from a car bomb on the compound's perimeter, followed by small-arms, rocket-propelled grenade and machine-gun fire.

"Afghan National Civil Order Police and international forces secured the headquarters and prevented insurgents from penetrating the compound perimeter while additional Afghan and ISAF forces reinforced the headquarters' defences and successfully repelled the attack," the statement said.
