Hong Kong, China (CNN) -- People took to the streets of Hong Kong on Thursday in marches that were timed for the 13th anniversary of the handover of the region from the United Kingdom to China.

July 1 has become synonymous with a call for democracy and activism for other causes. But groups representing the disabled, minorities, labor and religious groups also participated.
