London, England (CNN) -- A British marine was killed during in an exchange of fire with insurgents in southern Afghanistan, the Defense Ministry said.
The incident took place on Tuesday in the Sangin district of Helmand province.
NATO's International Security Assistance Force earlier reported a death after a small-arms attack but didn't report the service member's nationality.
More than 300 British forces have died in the war.
Lt. Col. James Carr-Smith, praised the slain marine, who was with the 40 Commando Royal Marines.
"He died a marine in the course of his duty and alongside his mates and Afghan National Army partners. He will be sorely missed, and his actions will not be forgotten. We will remember him," Smith said.
