(CNN) -- A British marine died during an exchange of fire with insurgent forces in Afghanistan's Helmand Province, Britain's Ministry of Defence said Tuesday.
The marine, who was assigned to 40 Commando Royal Marines, died in a military hospital Monday as a result of injuries sustained Sunday, the ministry said.
"He was part of a foot patrol that was providing local security whilst engineering improvements were being made to a patrol base in Sangin District when the incident happened," Task Force Helmand spokesman Lt. Col. James Carr-Smith said. "His courage and sacrifice will not be forgotten."
The marine's next of kin have been notified and have asked for a 24-hour grace period before further details are released, the ministry said.
