New Delhi, India (CNN) -- At least 14 people were dead and dozens more missing, after a boat capsized in northern India Monday, authorities said.

The vessel had about 65 people on board when it overturned in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh state, according to police.

Rescuers have recovered 14 bodies, while another 20 passengers were able to make it ashore, district police chief V.K. Shekhar told CNN.

Emergency crews are searching for the others, officers said.

The passengers were holding a sacred Hindu ritual in the middle of the river when the accident occurred, Shekhar said.
