(CNN) -- A British Marine was killed Wednesday in an explosion in Afghanistan's Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
The Marine was assigned to 40 Commando Royal Marines serving as part of Combined Forces Sangin, the ministry said. He was on a foot patrol with Afghan National Army soldiers "in order to reassure the local population" when the blast occurred.
"He died in the course of his duty seeking to improve the lives of the people of Sangin," said Lt. Col. James Carr-Smith.
The Marine's next of kin have been informed and asked for a 24-hour grace period before further information is released, the ministry said.
