Coal mine blast kills 21 in China

(CNN) -- A coal mine explosion in southwest China killed 21 workers, local officials said Friday.

The blast occurred Thursday in a shaft where 31 miners were working in Guizhou Province, state-run Xinhua news agency said.

Rescuers told Xinhua that 10 workers escaped from the Yuanyang Colliery mine after the explosion about 9:40 p.m. local time.

Officials are investigating the cause of the accident, Xinhua said.
