China names new party chief for Xinjiang

By the CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) -- China appointed a new Communist party leader Saturday for a region hit by deadly ethnic clashes last year between Uyghurs and Han Chinese, state media reported.

Zhang Chunxian was appointed party chief of the Xinjiang Uyghurs autonomous region, Xinhua news agency reported.

The area in northwest China was the scene of clashes last year when long-simmering resentment between minority Uyghurs and majority Han Chinese erupted into riots and left more than 200 people dead.
