New Delhi, India (CNN) -- At least nine people were killed in a fire at a multi-story commercial building in southern India Tuesday, police said.
Many of the deaths at the seven-story building in the high-tech city of Bangalore occurred when people trapped inside jumped, police commissioner Shankar Bidari told CNN.
The fire erupted in the lower floors and moved upwards rapidly, he said. Three women were among the dead.
More than 50 people suffered injuries, most of which were minor, Bidari said. The fire was brought under control in two hours as rescuers carried out an evacuation.
Bidari said a probe had been ordered to determine the cause of the blaze.
