(CNN) -- Two emergency teams worked Saturday to rescue 12 miners trapped inside a coal mine that caught fire in east China's Jiangxi Province, local officials told the state-run Xinhua news agency.

The accident occurred Friday afternoon at the Miaoshang Coal Mine in Yushui District, in Xinyu City, the district government said. It said the fire appeared to have been caused by a short circuit in underground cables.

The coal mine reports an annual output capacity of 60,000 tons.

Mine accidents are common in China. In 2008, 3,200 people were killed in such accidents, state media said.
