(CNN) -- An overloaded bus skidded into a dry canal in Bangladesh on Friday, killing at least 17 and injuring more than 50 passengers, police said.
The wreck occurred about 12:30 a.m. local time in the Faridpur district in central Bangladesh, said its police chief, Awlad Ali Fakir.
The bus driver lost control and hit a tree before crashing into the dry roadside canal, he said.
The dead included a 12-year-old girl.
Five passengers were in critical condition in hospitals, Fakir said.
