(CNN) -- An international scientific panel will investigate the cause of a cholera outbreak in Haiti, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said Friday.

The outbreak has killed more than 2,000 people and sickened nearly 100,000 in Haiti, which still is reeling from an earthquake that killed about 220,000 people in January.

The panel will be independent and have access to United Nations premises and personnel, Ban said.

"We want to make the best effort to get to the bottom of this and find answers that the people of Haiti deserve," he said.
