Brazil declares emergency in 14 states and capital because of fires

(CNN) -- Brazil's environment minister has declared a state of emergency in 14 states and the capital's federal district because of a large number of fires, the government's Agencia Brazil news outlet reported Wednesday.

Satellite images showed there were 1,178 fire nationwide on Wednesday, the news agency reported, citing Brazil's weather service.

The 14 states have been under environmental pressure since April, the environmental ministry said.
