(CNN) -- A man was shot and killed by elements of the Mexican federal police Monday afternoon after a chase on one of the busiest beltways in Mexico City, state-run news agency Notimex reported.

The suspect was killed after the chase ended, according to police reports cited by Notimex.

A woman who answered the phone at the federal police headquarters in Mexico City told CNN she was aware of the incident but did not offer details.

At least 20 cell phones and a grenade were found in the possession of the suspect, Notimex reported.

The capital of Mexico, Mexico City remains largely unaffected by a rash of violence across pockets of Mexico that has left more than 28,000 people dead in almost four years.
