(CNN) -- Colombian Vice President Angelino Garzon was recuperating Tuesday from quintuple bypass open-heart surgery a day earlier, a hospital official said.
Garzon, who was sworn into office Saturday, suffered a heart attack Monday and was taken to the Clinica Shaio cardiac center, where he underwent the surgery.
He remained sedated Tuesday, but doctors hoped to start weaning him from a respirator within the next few days, hospital director Carlos Alberto Cardona said in an interview with Radio Caracol.
Garzon will likely remain in intensive care for another two or three days but should be able to return to work within four to six weeks, doctors said.
The vice president will be advised to lose weight, get more exercise and improve his diet, Cardona said.
