(CNN) -- A former Uruguayan military officer suspected of participating in Argentina's "Dirty War" was extradited from Brazil to Argentina to face charges, the state-run Agencia Brasil reported.

Maj. Juan Cordeiro Piacentini was extradited Saturday and handed over to Argentine police, the agency reported.

Piacentini is accused of participating in Operation Condor, a plan to oppress opposition during Argentina's dictatorship in the 1970s, a period known as the "Dirty War." Specifically, Piacentini faces kidnapping charges related to the snatching of a 10-year-old boy in 1976, according to Agencia Brasil.

He had been in a Brazilian prison since last year, pending appeals against extradition because of his health. Brazil's supreme court ruled to go through with the extradition request.
