(CNN) -- Pirates have hijacked a ship sailing under a Panamanian flag off the coast of East Africa, authorities said Wednesday.

The MV Asphalt Venture has a crew of 15 Indians, the European Union Naval Task Force Somalia said in a statement.

The pirates struck about 100 nautical miles southeast of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the statement said.

The hijacking became apparent after the ship "made a sudden, unplanned deviation" from its course and did not respond to repeated radio calls, the statement said.
