(CNN) -- At least 37 people were killed and 26 injured when a minibus collided with a bus on a highway in Sudan, the African nation's official news agency reported Thursday, citing a police source.

Police Gen. Saad-Eddin Idris blamed the crash on speeding, but did not say which driver was at fault.

Some 30 people were killed on the minibus, and seven on the bus, he said.

A fire broke out following the accident, but civil defense policemen put it out and rescued the injured passengers, he said.

The collision took place on a highway south of the capital Khartoum, the SUNA agency reported.
