(CNN) -- At least 19 people died when a small plane crashed Wednesday in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a government official told CNN.

Mende Omalanga, a senior government spokesman, said the crash occurred in Bandundu Ville, the capital of Bandundu province in the western part of the vast African nation.

One person survived with injuries when the small plane, an LET 410 operated by Silair, crashed while on approach to land at the Bandundu Ville airport.

The plane was en route from Kinshasa, the nation's capital, and made at least two stops before reaching the town.
