(CNN) -- Two skiers were safe Wednesday after walking away from an avalanche near a Montana ski resort, authorities said.

The men, ages 32 and 42, were skiing outside of designated skiing areas north of Snowbowl Resort near Missoula when they were caught in the avalanche, said Missoula Country Sheriff Mike McMeekin.

The men were able to dig themselves out of the snow and walk to a radio tower site where they were able to contact emergency services, according to McMeekin. One of the men suffered a minor head injury.
