(CNN) -- The pilot of a small plane safely made an emergency landing on the grounds of a school in Portland, Oregon, Sunday evening, authorities said.
The pilot, who was not injured, was "very fortunate," said Kim Kosmas of Portland Fire and Rescue. "He apparently ran out of gas and looked for a safe place to land. Witnesses described hearing sputtering."
Portland Police found the single-engine plane undamaged in a field at Robert Gray Middle School around 7:14 p.m. The pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft, according to police.
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration have been notified and will investigate, authorities said.
