(CNN) -- People were evacuated for a short time after an explosion at a plant in Illinois late Monday, police said.
The explosion occurred at Magnesium Elektron plant near Madison shortly after 10 p.m. CT, police dispatchers said.
CNN-affiliate KMOV reported that people in surrounding communities were evacuated as huge plumes of smoke billowed in the air.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and the evacuation order was lifted about two hours after the blast.
There were no reports of injuries.
