Washington (CNN) -- A fire swept through an eight-story apartment building in Washington, early Wednesday, leaving one person dead and five others injured, authorities said.
The blaze claimed the life of a 38-year-old man who jumped through a fifth-floor window before firefighters arrived at the scene, said Pete Piringer, spokesman for the District of Columbia Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services.
Five others -- including three who were in critical condition -- were seriously injured, all suffering from burns and smoke inhalation, Piringer said. A 2-year-old child was among the victims.
The fire, which was reported shortly before 4 a.m. in a neighborhood off Washington's Mount Pleasant Street, displaced the building's some 130 residents, who were being sheltered at a nearby community center, he said.
